A good prompt removes the "I don\u2019t know what to write" hurdle. Choose a grade and a prompt type — narrative, opinion, descriptive, or imaginative — or leave it on "Any" for variety. Prompts are leveled so the language fits early writers and older students alike. Display one on the board or print it for writing journals.
Give students a minute to talk before they write, set a short timer for a focused "quick write," and celebrate ideas over perfection in first drafts. For the teaching moves behind strong writing, see the writing instruction guide.
